Winter is coming…what suit should you buy?

If you live in the Northeast and are beginning to feel the chill of the season, you should consider investing in a heavier wool suit.   The most comfortable, luxurious, yet affordable alternative is a lightweight flannel like those I carry from Vitale Barberis for suiting.  For sport coats, a medium weight wool with some loft to the fabric will work fine.  Below are two of my favorite flannel suits and a terrific winter-wool sport coat.

suit sleeve 2

Above, I’ve featured a medium blue flannel with a 3/4″ chalkstripe.  The detailing on the sleeve head is outrageous…beautifully coordinating marine blue stitching with purple/teal/blue grosgrain trim set off an equally impressive set of marbled navy buttons.

Above, I feature a unique light gray flannel with a subtle series of stripes.  The lining is a whimsical copy of sheet music.  Red pic stitching on the interior provides a pop of color!

sport coat 2

sport coat 3 sleeve

This winter-weight sport coat will go with everything…from tan, black or charcoal pants to your favorite jeans!  I chose a mocha twill fabric for the flat front trouser.  The shirt was designed to pull out the rust colors and the sleeve head detailing finishes off this outstanding winter sport coat.  Instead of a custom shirt, try a custom cashmere or ultra fine merino sweater in this season’s popular turtle neck styling, or if you prefer, a mock turtle.  The 1/4 zip works great also…with or without a casual collared shirt under!

Check with the custom clothier nearest you for what other options are available.

FALL FASHION VIEW FROM THE STYLE LEADER

There are loads of exciting changes coming to men’s suit offerings this season!

Flannels in luxurious, soft, lightweight fabrics are very popular.  Try a solid or micro pattern with a vest.  Why a vest?  Envision this vest under any other suit of complimentary color.

image

This subtle light gray suit has a micro stripe that really sets it apart.  To jazz it up further, consider one of today’s fresh, new linings…like this race horse lining if you want a longertrack season at Saratoga!

image

Finish your custom suit off with some fun detailing at your sleeve heads.  Here we went simple with black buttonholes and black grosgrain…but add a splash of otiginality by changing the last button hole thread color…to…???

image

Consider a complimentary charcoal flannel to round out your winter wardrobe.  This charcoal solid is all business when worn with a crisp white chirt and solid charcoal twill tie.

image

image

How about a fall-inspired collage of popular cigar labels?  Works great with this darker charcoal flannel!

Now…envision a vest in the micro gray flannel worn with the darker charcoal suit above!  Check out this popular skull and paisley lining!

So for Fall, talk with your custom clothier about adding a vest but one that will work with one or more From your suit collection.

Is 3-on-3 basketball a better workout than a full court run?

image

Many will be surprised with the answer!

The better, tougher aerobic workout is 3-on-3…if you follow the rules set out by the National Senior Games Association.  Most younger guys laugh when they see we older guys playing 3-on-3 at the YMCA…until they try it!  Then, they end up gasping for air on the bleachers after one game!

Here are the differences followed by a link to the National Senior Games Rules for those interested in reading further.

1) While National and State tourneys have refs, the refs rarely touch the ball once it’s put into play.
2) After a made basket, the ball is ready to be put into play by clearing it behind the 3-point line. Once the other team gets the ball to the top of the key, it is ready to be put into play.
3) The Defense has to find their man and get ready to defend.
4) Bigs on offense must exit the lane after a made basket and the ball is cleared to the top of the key. Once the ball is ready to be put into play, Bigs can re-enter the lane and accept a first pass…but they must start outside of the lane.
5) Fouls are a big difference. The offense always get the ball back after a foul except for the last two minutes of each half during which the game is live with all regular rules in effect.
5A) A foul on a shooter results in the shooter taking 1,2,3 shots depending on the foul. But…whether the shooter makes or misses his last foul shot, the Offense retains the ball! This is intended to keep fouls in check.
6) The game clock consists of two 15 minute running halves. The last two minutes of each half are on the clock with the clock stopping as in any regulation game.

How do I keep my shirt cuffs from falling down?

A number of my customers prefer to have their shirt cuffs, collars, and front plackets lined in a contrasting fabric or “trimmed out”.

One persistent question arises from many about how to roll up one’s sleeve to show the trimmed underside of the cuff…but keep the cuff up?

falling cuff

Does this look familiar?  What good is the trim on the underside of the cuff, if it is going to fall down all the time?  If you fold it twice so that it stays up…well…by-by to your trim!

good cuff

Same shirt…but the cuff stays in place with the underside trim exposed!  This is achieved by using the button hole on your shirt cuff to attach to the button on your shirt placket.  All custom shirts should have a placket button.  Many off-the-rack shirts do not to save a few cents in manufacturing costs.

placket button

In this photo, one can see the sleeve placket button which will be used to keep that cuff rolled up once.

placket buttonedHopefully you can visualize how the sleeve placket button was inserted into the cuff button hole, creating a cuff that will in fact stay up and show off that contrasting trim!

Enjoy the summer!

2016-17 GOAL is $10,000 Raise for Center for Disability Services

For those of you who did not attend the June 2, 2016 Center for Disability Services Cigar Aficionado night at the Pruyn House, Christopher’s Custom donated a gorgeous custom suit package that auctioned for just under $2,000.

Last year, our sport coat package auctioned for $1,500 and on June 2, 2016, it was my honor to present Alex Tronco, Long-time Center supporter and GM of the Northwestern Mutual Financial Planning Group, with a check for an additional $2,000 representing my pledge to donate 20% of every sale from new leads from last year’s event.  For the last 12 months, then, we were able to donate almost $6,000 to the Center!

navy and yellow plaid wool 240G summer weight suit

This year, 2016-17, I am shooting for $10,000 in pledged support

If you are interested in being a part of this initiative by considering a suit or sport coat package from Christopher’s Custom for your next wardrobe update, click on the above photo to be taken to a link with more details about how to schedule an appointment.

Thanks in advance for thinking of me when you are ready to add to your wardrobe.  During June, the above offer is valid.

One Mistake Guys Don’t Have to Make This Spring!

Today I received a GQ post that I never thought about…at least not in the way they’ve highlighted a fashion blunder. How to look short 2

James Van Der Beek, well-known actor, is a solidly-built 6’1″ but made one fatal mistake recently.  See if you can identify what his mistake was…

How to look short 1

Give Up?

Ven Der Beek is wearing an outfit that GQ would otherwise endorse…slim-fitting checked shirt, white sneaks, trim-cut blue trousers…BUT…the contrasting, caramel-colored belt cuts him in half!

The solution?  Simple…when wearing a belt with a casual (aka non-jacketed) outfit, wear a belt that is more monochromatic in color.  Another option would be to wear the shirt out, over his pants…as long as the length of the shirt is appropriately short.

Ask your custom clothier about belts…and casual shirt lengths!

Another Final Four Winner!

Here is what Jay’s blazer will look like when his new gold-toned buttons have been applied to replace the silver-toned buttons he earned for his Final Four appearance in 2009.

Jay Wright buttons 2016

The FINAL FOUR COACHES’ CLUB awards a custom blazer to each coach making it to the Final Four.  If you do not win, you get silver-toned buttons.  In and of itself, this is a noteworthy accomplishment as I’m sure all will agree!  BUT…if you win the Big Dance…you get the bragging rights to gold-toned buttons!

Jay wright buttons

Christopher’s Custom is proud to be the exclusive designer for these super custom blazers!  As a life-long hoops fan and aging participant…I am living the dream!  And…I still have one year of NCAA hoops eligibility left!  I would bring maturity to the right team…maybe slow down their average sprint times…but still…

My daughter Natalie is very proud to have graduated from Nova and is a huge fan!  Congrats, Jay, on a stellar 2015-16 year and outstanding coaching during this year’s NCAA Championships!
